Repertoire Requirements

Submitted repertoire is subject to approval by the Competition Artistic Committee. The same piece may not be performed more than once over the course of the Competition.

 

Young Musicians

One Round Only
Performance Duration: No more than 10 minutes
   Two contrasting pieces from any time period
   One piece must be by a Russian Composer


Junior Category

One Round Only
Performance Duration: No more than 15 minutes

First Selection:
   One Virtuoso Etude of contestant's choice

Second Piece:
   Any movement of a Classical Sonata, no repeats. Sonatinas are not acceptable.

Third Piece:
   One piece by a Russian Composer (no Concertos)


Intermediate Category

Two Rounds
The same piece may not be performed in a subsequent round.

Round One:
Performance Duration: 10-15 minutes

First Selection:
   One piece, or set of two pieces, from the Baroque time period 

Second Selection:
   One Virtuoso Etude of the contestant's choice 

Third Selection:
   One piece by a Russian Composer (no Concertos) 

Final Round:
Performance Duration: no more than 15 minutes
First Piece:
   1st Movement from a Classical Sonata - no repeats 

Second Selection:
   One piece by a Russian Composer (no Concertos)  


Advanced Category

Three Rounds
The same piece may not be performed in a subsequent round.

Round One:
Performance Duration: 15-20 minutes

First Selection:
   One piece from a polyphonic style - original works only (Bach, Buxtehude, Hindemith, Mendelssohn, Shchedrin, Shostakovich, Taneev)

Second Selection:
   One Virtuoso Etude of the contestant's choice

Third Selection:
   One piece, or selected single movement(s) from a Sonata, or a set of short pieces. The selection must be by a Russian composer

Round Two:
Performance Duration: 20-25 minutes

First Selection:
   First movement from a Classical Sonata – no repeats (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)

Second Selection:
   Any piece from Romantic or Impressionistic time period 

Third Piece:
   One piece, or selected single movement(s) from a Sonata, or a set of short pieces. The selection must be by a Russian composer

Final Round
Performance Duration: 55-60 minutes

A recital program, with repertoire entirely of the contestant's choosing. Only published works will be permitted. For any work written after 1970, contestants must present the score to the jury before the performance. Contestants must include at least one long work (20 minutes or longer). No restrictions on the musical form. As an example, the long work could be a Sonata, a set of Variations, a complete set of Preludes from the same opus number, a multi-movement work (such as Carnaval by Schumann, Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, Miroirs by Ravel, etc.).
